My son and I took the drive from Nanaimo to Cathedral Grove BC, and it turned out to be exactly what we both needed. The drive takes about forty-five minutes, winding through forested roads that feel alive with colour this time of year. The fall leaves painted the hills in gold and red, and with every curve in the road, my mood lifted a little more. Sometimes it’s not about getting away from home; it’s about finding a change of pace.
Arriving at Cathedral Grove
Cathedral Grove sits within MacMillan Provincial Park, right along Highway 4 on the way to Port Alberni. Even before you step onto the trail, the size of the trees grabs your attention. These old-growth Douglas fir and red cedar trees are enormous—some more than 800 years old and wider than a car. The parking lots on both sides of the highway fill up fast, but we found a spot easily that morning.

Exploring Both Sides of the Forest
We started on the south side of the highway, where the main loop trail winds through towering firs. The path is flat and well-kept, perfect for kids. The morning air was cool, damp, and smelled like cedar and rain. Sunlight filtered through the branches, lighting up patches of moss and leaves along the trail.
After we finished that loop, we crossed to the north side. This section leads down toward the river and a few small bridges that make the walk even more fun for kids. The sound of rushing water followed us most of the way. My son picked up bright leaves, tossed rocks into the river, and tested every bridge we came across. We stopped often just to look up; the scale of the trees is hard to take in.

Slowing Down Together
Cathedral Grove is one of those rare places that makes you slow down without trying. There’s no rush, no long climb, and no pressure to “do” anything. We took our time, talking, laughing, and exploring whatever caught our eye. Watching my son run across the bridges and count the fallen leaves reminded me how good it feels to be outside without a schedule.

A Fall Drive Worth Taking
The drive back to Nanaimo was just as beautiful. The sun broke through the clouds, lighting up the wet pavement and turning the trees into a blur of gold and orange. It’s the kind of drive that makes you appreciate living on Vancouver Islandwhere a short morning trip can feel like a full reset.
