During our most recent camping trip on the west coast, we were lucky to have clear skies and sunny weather. Those sunny days turned into the kind of sunsets that remind you why Vancouver Island is so special. For our first night, we picked McKenzie Beach in Tofino, and the view did not disappoint.
Endless Shoreline and Ocean Views
McKenzie Beach stretches out farther than it first appears. When the tide is low, it feels like you could walk for days. The beach is calm and shallow near the shoreline, making it a favourite for families and evening walks. On the far end, soft sand dunes rise up along the treeline, and it is known that wolves sometimes make their dens in that area. It adds to the wild, untouched feel of the place.

Watching the Sunset
As the sun began to set, the whole sky turned gold and pink, reflecting across the wet sand. The sound of gentle waves mixed with the distant call of seabirds, and everything felt perfectly still. It is the kind of moment that makes camping worth it—the quiet, the colour, and the sense that you are right where you should be.
The Interpretive Centre
Near the beach, there is an interpretive centre filled with information and local artifacts. It is a great stop for learning about the area’s natural and cultural history. While it is closed during the shoulder season, you can still walk up to the patio and take in one of the best elevated views of McKenzie Beach. It is worth the quick detour, especially at sunset.

A Classic Tofino Evening
McKenzie Beach Tofino captures everything people love about the west coast. Open skies, long beaches, and the sound of waves rolling in make it one of the best spots to unwind after a day of exploring. Whether you visit in summer or during the quieter months, it is the perfect place to slow down and watch the day fade away.
